The Benefits of a Healthy Lawn
What benefits does a lawn give me?
1. Businesses and manufacturing premises that have a well maintained lawn area not only extend a favourable, more environmentally friendly impression to the public, employees and customers. A well-kept lawn can even increase the value of your property by up to 6%.
2. Turf grasses act as exterior, all-natural 'air conditioners', cooling the surrounding temperature from ground level. Eight healthy, well-tended front lawns have the same cooling effect as 70 tonnes of air conditioning, or enough to cool 16 large homes.
3. Smoke and dust particles from the atmosphere are trapped by turf, making the air clearer and fresher.
4. Areas of well-maintained lawn around buildings can actually reduce your insurance costs as they work as a fire retardation buffer.
5. Groundwater can be enhanced by a dense turf. Turfgrasses increase the infiltration of water and clean the water as it passes through meaning underground water supplies are recharged for use by us all.
6. Our collective health is enhanced by turfgrasses as they function in cushioning, cleaning air, generating oxygen and creating a serene, peaceful landscape.
7. Lawns are estimated to occupy an area of between 4,000,000 to 4,500,000 acres in the UK and as the population increases
so to will the amount of turf grass acreage.
8. Noise is absorbed by grass areas which cut down on the excessive sound, a growing problem in urban areas.
9. Grassed slopes beside lowered roadways reduce noise by 8-10 decibels.
10. Oxygen generation by turfgrasses has a major impact in making our environment habitable.
11. A 50 square foot lawn produces enough oxygen for a family of four.
